Transportation Vet graduating wtih a degree in Paralegal in 12/2013 relocating to Texas

Veteran

Lindsay Brewer Milwaukee , WI

I am wanting to relocate to Fort Worth, TX once I graduate in a year...I'm nervous as I also have a one year old son to think about, granted he isn't school aged so that should be much easier. I just want to know if anyone on here has done it. If so, what did you do that made it successful?

I have a year to save up money for the move...maybe a few more months additionally (as I don't want to move in December from WI!)

I stumbled upon this site from asking google "when to start looking for a job when relocating" and thought I'd join since it's for Veterans. Any help would be appreciated.

Hi, Lindsay. My company works with ACP to establish Mentor/Protege relationships in the Dallas area. I'd be happy to talk to you about what opportunities are available in Dallas/Ft. Worth and I'd also like to connect you to my last Protege who is also a single parent and moved to Dallas with her son. I'm sure Rebecca will have some great tips and insight. Feel free to call (214-500-5687) or email (tomlinsonjk@aol.com) me. I will help any way I can. My company has locations all over Texas. When I get your email I will send you a link to our job site.

Howdy Lindsay, Career opportunities are plentiful here in the DFW area. Cost of living is one of the best in the country.

Hi Katie

Thank you so much for the warm wishes, that means a lot. :)

I, for some reason, (probably being a new mom) didn't even think of the kid stuff...geesh. That's a really good idea.

Thank you again,

I will keep Austin in mind. I've heard it's awesome there, the music scene and stuff.

I'd love to hear more of it actually...if you do not mind?

Hi Lindsay,
Good luck with the move! I am in Austin so if you decide to look farther south, can give recommendations more specifically. But I would start keeping a list of all of the kid-related needs so you can start looking for mom websites or ping local friends to get advice on good day cares or nanny services, pediatricians, since this can also impact where you will live/work.

I'm sure you will be successful in your move with this much advance planning. Hope you and your son love being future Texans!

Hi Lindsay,
Now is a great time to ask that question. There is a lot of hiring that goes on in the Fall semester. Thats where companies get their prime candidates. Its the best time to start making an impression. Many companies start recruiting in the Fall because they know what they're approved budgets are projected to be. Spring semester starts to get tougher but there are still opportunities out there. Feel free to email me personally if you have more questions (megan.elizabeth.mccarthy@gmail.com).

Hi Lindsay. Glad to se you're thiking ahead - that's a big thing. Keep in mind that it can take 4-6 months to find employment, so you want to be well on your way in the search before you want to be in Ft Worth. Also, consider how restricted in location you need to be. For instance, if you're moving to FW to be near family to help with your son, you'll want to focus on that side of town. But if you can be more flexible, you open up more options in the DFW metroplex (like Hurst, Bedford, Euless, Arlington, etc.) that are still in the FW area. You can can email me at my gmail.com address if you you have some more specific questions (RogerBhalla@...).
