Where do veterans tend to prosper whithin the consulting field. Are there any areas where they are particularly successful based on their military experience?
Answers
Veterans because of the varied backgrounds, have the opportunity to consider any field. Where your skill strength is, helps you decide where to go. Where you in a unit using mathematical skills, strategic planning, What do you feel are your strengths that can be transformed into the non military world. Do you like giving guidance to others? maybe be a job recruiter and see what one catches your interest as well.
Hi Andrei,
I concur with Kevin's feedback, as I have seen veterans excel in such a wide variety of sectors in consulting. It is not possible to mention just one or two areas because everyone brings a wealth of experience both from their military careers, their education, other work experience and personal interests that make each person a good fit for different things. There really is no "one size fits all" when it comes to translating military experience into valuable consulting skills. As Kevin mentioned, translating the jargon is key, but so is assessing what you are passionate about and excel in regarding your experience. Did you love doing supply chain and would like to continue? There are ample opportunities to continue that passion in consulting. Did you love looking at the strategy and trying to work on getting the organization pointed in the right direction to fulfill its mission? There are also ample opportunities to do that within consulting. Do you prefer looking at the human resources in an organization and determining ways in which the talent they hire could better fit their needs? Consulting also offers you a chance to do this. There are so many avenues, it is difficult to capture them in one response, but please feel free to reach out if you have more specific interests that you would like more information about.
Best,
Andrea
Veterans prosper across a variety of consulting service areas, it really depends on your individual experience and skill set. Deloitte has posted a variety of job profiles as examples of consulting careers that veterans have excelled at. Feel free to review to see if any seem a good fit for you. Also, when preparing your resume for future job opportunities focus on translating your military experience to align with related civilian careers, avoid military jargon and terminology in your resume. Happy to follow-up with you via a direct message.
