Retiring and seeking out of state jobs...

Veteran

Edward Hand Leesburg , GA

I am currently on terminal leave after 22 years in the Marine Corps. I have been looking for opportunities in the central Florida, primarily in the defense/military sector. I have not had any luck other than one offer that I received primarily because of someone I know, but the offer was to low.

I do not know if the issue is my resume, expectations, or something else. Any advice on the best approach to take with these companies?

Thanks.

Sometimes, the key is finding out where the jobs are.

I work for a global "DBFO" (design, build, finance, operate) company that does a large amount of government and defense work. I'm currently seeing 27 government and/or military jobs in Florida on our company site. Since I don't know what's on your resume, I can't say what might be a good match for you.

The company is AECOM. You can find out more at www.aecom.com. For information specific to what they do in defense, select "markets" at the top, and choose the market "government", and sub-market "defense".

To go directly to the government jobs in Florida, try: http://aecom.jobs/government-jobs/new-jobs/?location=Florida#1

Hope this helps. I'm always available to discuss the company, my history as a veteran, tips, etc.

Edward-
Thanks for your service!
If you wouldn't mind sending me your resume via private message, then I'll take a look at it and see if I can suggest any local opportunities, or provide any advice on your resume. I am based in Central Florida and have clients who support US Army PEO STRI, US Navy NAWCTSD, and USMC PM TRASYS.
Thanks!

Edward,

It could be all of the above. Defense contract jobs (I assume you're referring to) are filled largely via these personal relationships and you may need to take a lower offer to break into that sector. If you got the interview and an offer, it certainly wasn't your resume or interviewing skills. It could be your expectations or a narrow focus.

What is it in the defense/military sector that you are seeking? Further, what are the common threads you find in these positions that make them so attractive? Why are you more qualified to do the job for X salary than the guy who accepted the offer for Y? If you drill down on these, I think it would be very helpful.

Also...congratulations on your retirement! I was in your shoes about two years ago.

Regards,

Will

Hi Edward,

Taking in consideration that I don't know the specifics of your experience, I would say ensure your experience and resume aligns with the position to which you are applying. I would be happy to take a look at your resume and provide feedback and see if there are any positions available at Deloitte that fits your interest.

Robert-

Thanks. I have looked at AECOM, but have not found anything where both my qualifications and interests meet up.

William-

Thanks. I honestly believe that the interview and offer I received had more to do with a relationship I had rather than my resume.

As far as working in that sector, it is what I have been doing the majority of my life, so the transition would certainly be easier. Besides that, I would love to be able to continue supporting those in harms way, and doing what I can to ensure they have what they need to get the job done.
