How do I get art shows to expose my artwork as a wounded veteran

Veteran

Dan Hawk Chesapeake , VA

20 + year disabled veteran artist looking for art shows or places to display my work. I have heard of art shows in Washington DC, that is 4 hours from me in Virginia Beach. I am also trying to start up Artwork by Veterans, which is a support group for veterans dealing with this issue, getting veteran artists work out there.

Dan,
I wanted to clarify what kind of shows you were really looking for. Would you like to be in a gallery or have a booth at an art festival? Both are work and both will probably require a portfolio. Look into a local artists guild or co-op. Guilds usually have low dues, but do not always have a space to feature the members work. A co-op often times requires a monthly fee, but you will have guaranteed space.

I've been assisting a close friend through this process, she is also a disabled veteran artist. We've made some mistakes and learned a lot. Finding your audience can be a long road and sometimes you have to think outside of the box. For instance, some coffee shops will offer art for sale, look around. Also, local businesses like doctor or dentist offices, will be part of a local artist display program where the art is swapped out quarterly giving local artists exposure to new eyes.

This is just the tip of the iceberg for what's out there for you!
