I would definitely check with the school you want to attend. When I started my MBA program the school I attended didn't require it. You may also want to check with schools that are geared for the military, they may waiver the GMAT scores.

When I prepped for the GMAT, I went to a used bookstore and got a study book with a practice exam DVD included. Total cost was about $10 I think and I felt it helped me get an idea of what to expect on the exam. My book was from Kaplan but I'm sure there are many options.

Hi Willy,

Definitely look into what the institution you're interested in attending requires. If they don't require any - great! If they do, research online to see which test format best fits you (you can just Google that and find great info about how the tests are set up). If you're self-motivated, I'd save the money on the prep classes and do at-home studying. My library offers several GRE / GMAT prep books, which is great for the wallet!

Hi Willy,

Before you jump into a GMAT prep course or into the exam itself, be sure to check with your potential MBA programs to see if the exam is even required. The MBA program at my institution accepts GMAT or GRE, but also offers candidates an alternative math & writing profile called an Individual Learning Profile.

Time to do some more investigating on admission requirements first and maybe save yourself some money.

Hi Willy,
Thanks for your service to our country. What I had done many years ago was to get books for self prep and borrow materials from others who had taken the exam. Amazon has several options for self prep books @ $20 each. That may be an appoach to get you started.
