Jimetrius:

It depends on what type of company you're looking to start. Many cities have incubator programs that help you with mentoring and finding financing (Detroit, Atlanta, and San Francisco, for example). Some cities are offering tax-free incentives like New York City, see http://startup.ny.gov/business-growth .

If you're starting an online business, you might not have to go anywhere, unless you're looking to hire skilled techies. If that's the case, you might want to start your company in a city with lots of tech grads.

It all depends on what you sell. I wouldn't start a snow shoveling business in Florida or a golf course in Alaska.

From my millennium contacts....I am a retired boomer: Denver, Omaha,Portland. If I was still in the workforce I would run a crew of bungalow repair and upgrade...the market will be good for years with this current move to urban in fill.

It depends on the business you wish to start. Amazon started in Seattle so that it could be next to the largest book distributor. Tech companies gravitate to San Francisco, because that is where the computer engineers are. You need to consider the resources you need, especially the most difficult to obtain and use that as a basis for your decision.

For general advice about locations, search online. Several publications -- Forbes, Entrepreneur.com, Bloomberg, etc. -- publish lists of the best cities for small businesses, startups, etc.

Best of luck!

Both advisors have presented great questions and suggestions. I would say work on keeping your expenses down while you craft a business plan to be able to execute on if you don't have one already.. Post news on your developments and I'm sure we will have more thoughts on how to get you to where you want to go. (Portland and Seattle are pretty great in so many ways)

You may also want to check out that city/state's programs for start up companies. Kentucky has some awesome programs. Louisville KY has its own start up assistance program. http://www.startuplouisville.com/accelerators/ , http://www.up.co/communities/usa/louisville , https://www.thinkkentucky.com/smallbusiness/BusStart.aspx and these are just a few I Googled.
