Looking for a career as a firefighter paramedic in North Carolina, any advice?

Veteran

Micheal Randall Morehead City , NC

I have experience with EMS, no fire experience. I am currently attending a fire academy in Morehead City, NC. I would love to stay on the coast and get trained in water rescue and dive rescue. I'm just having some trouble finding an open job market for someone with my skills/interests.

The absolute greatest thing you can do is to finish the fire academy and then take paramedic program through the local college. Paramedic is the highest commodity in emergency services - nearly every fulltime position list Paramedic licensure as a requirement or preference. A firefighter with 10 years experience of firefighting actually loses to a 2 year firefighter with a paramedic license nearly every time. This is because EMS makes up 50-90% of calls for all career fire departments that provide medical response. In most states, Paramedic can be accomplished with an Associate's Degree which gives you yet another step above the competition.
