What would be the best Masters Degree for me to Pursue?

Veteran

Tyler Tryon Lenexa , KS

I am currently a Bio-Med in both the Army Reserves and Civilian side. I will achieve my Bachelors in Bio-Medical Electronics in June and will have my diploma in September. I have been told that if I want to move above Bio-Med manager that I need a Business Degree, most preferably an MBA. I would like some input from the civilian medical community on what would be best if I hope to become a Director, Chief or VP at a civilian hospital.

Thank You

Hi Tyler,
My specialty is radiology and I chose to get an MBA. I currently work for HCA/Parallon and I know that when they are look for someone for their internship programs for executive positions they look for an MBA or a Masters in Healthcare Administration. I would tell you though that an MBA would serve you well in any field. That gives you more flexibility should you decide to expand into another area. You can’t go wrong with an MBA. If you are looking at online education, there are several schools that offer a very large military discount for active duty, prior service, and spouses of veterans. I am currently pursuing an educational doctorate from Liberty University and the cost of the program is almost half of what it would have been. Once you pick your degree, shop around for the school that suits you best as well as one that won’t break the bank. Good luck, Loretta.

Tyler, thank you for your service. I passed your question to my friend Dr. Larry Demers, professor emeritus at the M.S. Hershey Medical Center of Pennsylvania State University who responded: "I would suggest to this young man that he look into a degree in Hospital Management. Several schools have programs geared for Hospital Administration and Management. Penn State offers degrees in Hospital Administration and Management so I suggest he start there. Have him contact me if he has any further questions." If you would like to talk with Larry email me (billnobles@optonline.net) and I can provide his email address.
Best wishes, Bill Nobles

Hello,

I am not in this field but thought I'd share some links with you to provide additional insights into your request.

First, I would look at jobs that are at the director level and understand what sort of requirements as well as education and training they are seeking. This will provide you some insight into what you will need to add to your experience and/or can already leverage from your own background.

Next, make sure, if you have not already done so, join and/or start reading industry materials that involve your area of interest. Do you belong to any bio-med associations, are you reading up on the latest news? This is a great way to also get engaged with associations and network with potential employers as well as networking with others who are in the same boat as you.

Here are some links that I hope will prove useful to you. Please pardon if you have already been to these sites.
