Interview on Thursday

Veteran

Jeff White Denver , CO

I am currently enrolled in a Homeland Security Degree and was offered to interview for a student intern position at the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). My question is regarding the questioning they may ask. Why do you want this job? What will you take away/ have to offer to us? etc. How can I correlate what they do with protecting securities to what my degree plan is? I've done some research on the commission and I feel like this job may be a little above me. That being said I have met the requirements for the spot. I just want to be prepared for the interview as best as possible. Thanks for your time.

Jeff,
First you have to be able to answer the "why do I want this job" for yourself. They clearly think you have something to offer otherwise, they wouldn't have asked you to come in for an interview.

I suggest asking for a job description or taking a closer look at the one you have and looking at the requirements from a more high-level perspective, (i.e., leading teams correlates to your leading a battalion and expound on how you did it so everyone worked together and met the common goal).

Look at your background in addition to your degree - THAT is what you're bringing to the table. They are looking at the whole you, not just the student you so prepare your answers based on ALL that you offer, rather than focusing on just your degree.

I also have a list of questions that are typically asked during an interview and would be happy to provide it to you so you can have a sense of what to expect - just email me privately with your email and I'll send it over to you.

Lastly, make sure you put together a list of questions to take with you into the interview because it shows that you've taken the interview seriously and are interested in the position. Do your homework on the SEC and the type of work that pertains to the position.

Also, (and you may already know all of this) send a follow up email to those you interview with no more than 24-48 hours after your interview. Email thank you's are fine and acceptable. Take notes during your interview - this helps you to remember the key points of what they're looking for and good talking points for your thank you follow up.

I hope some of this helps.
Best regards,
Brage
