Have you participated in VOWS? What are the benefits? Who can veterans contact?
I am seeking career advancement within veteran programs and would like more information regarding VOWS. If you have experience in veteran related programs who hire on Wall Street or areas in NY please post your experience. I'm looking to learn more about what these programs offer from the veterans point of view.
Please post any helpful information to help veterans find alternative avenues in networking with groups who provide opportunities in the investment world.

Hi Carlos, I am Charlie, former Marine and retired from the Air Force Reserve. I am a retail
"wealth manager"/ financial advisor with a Series 7 license, and make my living with managing assets under management and marketing financial service. It is a great career and I am in my 30th year. Suggest you think beyond veteran's networks in the NYC area. You can be a retail advisor/ salesman/ stockbroker/ wealth manager in any community in the US. Suggested reading is important: Read these books cover to cover then read them again:
1. How to become an investment banker, by the "girl banker". Google up girlbanker. She worked for Goldman Sachs. 2. Google, "theibanker.com" That is i like investment banker. Read that blog and get the book, becoming an investment banker. 3. Read, by Eric Banks, Working the Street. 4. Google, Morning coffee, and efinance .com
There is lots of reading to do to figure out where you want to work and what job you want.
Sales, trading, investment banking, compliance, portfolio mangement, etc. You must learn the industry and suggest you read the above. Best wishes, good luck, Semper Fi.
Also, you always start building a library on getting a job on Wall Street, or getting a job in trading, sales, investment banking, etc. The books totally lay out the map on how to break into the industry. Again, think beyond veteran's groups. Thank you.
Carlos, I recently participated in VOWS in New York City last month and found it very informative and educational. Through VOWS, I enrolled in ACP and have a mentor whom I can regularly talk with and gain insights in corporate cultures.
I recommend that you submit your application to ACP if you haven't done already and find out what are some opportunities (e.g. Mentoring) near where you are. VOWS also had some big companies during events which you can talk to. One of another benefits is resume review and recommendation. Hope this helps.

Carlos,
VOWS is especially helpful if you are interested in a career in financial management. Although not looking for a career in that particular field myself, I still found the seminar worthwhile although the trip to NY can be expensive. Discovering ACP and Conditions Set resume review was the key takeaways of my VOWS experience, which has proven very beneficial. If you can attend VOWS I would recommend it.
Best Regards,
-Bill
