I'm not having much success finding an environmental compliance job, any suggestions?

Veteran

Steve Peelish Manassas , VA

I have been looking towards retirement and have been fairly active in my job searches with little success. I have many years in the regulatory environmental compliance realm (B.S., Environmental Science) as well as a M.S., Occupational Safety/Health. I have been mainly focusing on certain geographical areas such as WV, OH, VA, PA, and maybe CO. Additionally, I'm a a mid-grade officer in the US Coast Guard and have several assignments managing and supervising workforces. I would like to stay in this field if possible and work for either an energy or oil company as their compliance guy.

Steve:
The excellent advice given to utilize LinkedIn and/or Facebook is part of your multi-pronged search campaign. Use of recruiters, job boards, corporate career websites and network groups are all of use. Your public persona on each should look like a summarized resume with related skills/professional background, certifications that you are selling. Recruiters use LinkedIn as less or no fees for placements are involved compared to a Monster or other job boards. There is an abundance of tips on marketing yourself to a broad audience. Use LinkedIn join industry and related special interest groups to network to. Try to join/connect with two or more groups in your free time and let them help you in your search as a welcome team effort. Your technical background, proven leadership and teaming skills make you very marketable. Considering the specialized industry, geography may be an issue and your mobility will come into play, which sounds like your open to. Best of luck and remember, that your search is multifaceted, creative, highly motivated through to landing - and you will. John

My advice would be to get onto Linkedin, if you arent already (www.linkedin.com), and set up a profile. There are a lot of jobs posted there, including environmental positions. In the areas you are looking at, there should be openings with oil & gas companies, as well as consulting firms that serve them. The Marcellus Shale Coalition (http://marcelluscoalition.org/job-portal) might be another good place to check for oil & gas jobs. Your technical experience, along with your leadership and discipline skills from the USCG, should be a real asset to any employer. Good luck!
