Which certification should I get

Veteran

Anyone know anything regarding the utility of either a CAP (certified administrative professional) certification or a CM (Certified Manager) certification? Both of these are something I could pursue via a program called Navy COOL where the Navy would pay for me to test for these certifications I just am unsure of their overall utility. I know that the PHR/SPHR is the gold standard for HR Professionals (what my degrees are in) however I need to be an E6 to apply for PHR (Navy will not pay for SPHR) so I am looking at things I could do now (IE the above 2 certifications). Thanks.

Brian, think about what direction interest you most. Is it management or administrative? Then go for the certification that seems to be of greatest interest to you. I wouldn't recommend getting a certificate for the sake of getting one to have it unless it will help you get to where you want to be next.

Brian,

I'm pretty dubious as to the value of CAP or CM. I'm an HR professional, and even though PHR/SPHR do help, they are 'nice to haves'- experience and relevant achievements will always be number 1, formal education is also useful.

Generally speaking, in my mind certifications are more beneficial to the organizations which sponsor/promote them more than anything else. Obvious exceptions to this are professions where certification and/or licensure is required to practice, but HR, management, or administration don't reach that threshold.
