What are the best Masters Degree programs online?

Veteran

Demetrius Carter Houston , TX

I'm approaching graduation from The Art Institute of Houston in September with a Bachelors of Science in Visual Effects and Motion Graphics and I'm strongly considering pursuing a Masters Degree. Any advice on the best online programs?
Thanks!

Demetrius,

Thank you for your service.

I am a graduate of SCAD, Savannah College of Art and Design, 1991 with a major in Graphic Design. Three year ago I received my Masters from SCAD as well and I did it all online. They have a very robust list of online Masters degrees and I am certain they have something that is in your field. They have rapidly expanded all the programs they offer to include online learning. It was a great experience for me. I hope this helps.

Hi Demetrios - hey a fellow Art Institute person! I've been teaching for AI - online - for years. But there is some good advice up above - why are you interested in going from your bachelors right to your masters? I'm assuming you want an MFA? This is an excellent/essential degree if you want to teach, although for K-12 you do also need a license.

But if you want to do your own designs then get your work out there and get experience. That will help you choose the best master's program for you. There aren't that many online MFA programs but they are out there. The Academy of Art University or SCAD (Savannah College of Art and Design) may have them.

How did you like AI Houston and enjoy the course-free living for awhile!

Keep me posted!

All of the above (the GOAL is critical, else why do it)? Plus, here are a few links to peruse. US News and Kiplinger are well thought of, in terms of their school rankings, in general.

Hello Demetrius,

First, thank you for your service!

What field are you considering going for a master's degree in? In your field, is experience more important than education? For example, would you be in the same place (or higher) salary-wise, if you worked full-time, rather than went to school (or worked part-time, while in school)? In the future, is the career path the same?

I don't know much about online programs but I would imagine that some programs are less reputable than others. Please be sure to thoroughly investigate any program (look up reviews, possibly ask employers in your field, etc.) before enrolling.

Finally, are online programs less respectable in your field that in-person programs? If you need to do an online program, can you possibly do one through a college with a physical presence as well?

HI - First - Thank you for your service. I am grateful for you! Second - the big question as asked before - why are you getting the Masters? I found that having my MBA was great for some position and it helped me re-position my self into my career. But after going "live" and hands on you may find that your interests or total area of focus have changed. I know that the inclination may be that you are "losing ground" with the time delay but think of it as "getting perspective". I would look for those that might have positions that you are interested in and ask them for an Informational interview - they may have a degree and may be able to share what about it is important and why, or that it wasn't needed at all!

Give yourself the gift of time - and perspective. It may save you money and effort or give you the right path!

Maybe it's better for you to get some hands-on experience first, for a year or two or maybe three and then return to studies. Otherwise, you might be considered too academic for job openings in your field in the future. That's just my opinion. Have you investigated where exactly, you could find a job with these kinds of skills? Do some research. It's always good to have a cash flow coming in.

What career path are you pursuing, what is your objective?
I was unable to find a specific online school that offers a masters.

If you can be more specific I can give you a better answer.

I did find this course from American Writers & Artists Inc. in graphic design success.
It is an accelerated program for starting and succeeding in Direct Marketing Graphic Design.

This course combined with your current education and AWAI's resources could be what you are looking for to advance your professional career.

Here is a link to their online catalog: http://www.awaionline.com/go/index.php?af=1596349

Check out their site for articles and other helpful resources.
