How far out from my transition leave date should I submit applications?

This issue has bothered me for quite some time about timely submission of applications. I've gotten answers from 120 days down to 30 days before signing out on leave. There are so many jobs that I meet the requirements for but cannot act upon submitting an application due to my timeframe. I will start transition leave at the end of August 2014 and looking for employment no earlier than October 1, 2014; however, I'm very open-minded about finding a job and working in September.

Lastly, is there anyone on this rewarding site that can look over my resumes? I have four that are tailored to specific career fields. Thank you for taking the time out of your busy schedules to read and assist me.

Hello Steven,

My first thought was, if you are thinking of mailing it, consider changing it to finding someone in the company (via linkedin, etc) to send it for you. On linkedin, you can search by company name & then ask to show 1 or 2 degree connections, then request then to forward.

Second depends on which field, for Technology 2-3 weeks is enough, max 4 weeks. Even if it is a direct email to hr@nnn.com, that way you can do a phone conversation if needed & attend any onsite within 2-3 weeks.

For resume review request, it would depend on the roles you have in mind. My experience makes it more appropriate for Technology & maybe HR\Training roles. Private message might be best.

Hi Steven,

Thanks for serving! I can identify with your concerns about when to start putting in applications. My two cents are this:

- Its never too early to land a job interview, even if you still have an active duty commitment. I think that by going on a civilian job interview you will get a better sense of what's required before you loose your active duty pay.

- My last two cents, send me your resume and I will be more than happy to look over your accomplishments. I think asking for feedback is an excellent way to put tools for success in your toolbox.

When I transitioned, I was lucky enough to have a husband who had never served so he was my sounding board. I had to rely on his interpretations of the pulse of the job market. He sees things from the reality of how they are out there. I was green because I spent 21 years in the military having a job. So what am I saying? Please listen with a careful ear to the folks around you who have never served when it comes to the civilian job market. They have an expertise that we don't yet.

At this late date, I certainly don't think it's too early to submit job applications, but I think you should pay particular attention to focusing on market sectors where your qualifications are a good fit and which are growing and advancing in today's business environment.

Please let me review your resume and get an understanding of the specific types of positions you're looking for and what career path is of most interest to you. The job market seems to be opening up a bit and there's no reason why we can't position you to land a rewarding, fulfilling job at a promising organization.
