Hello Sergeant Stapleton Brown!

First and foremost, many thanks for all you do!

When time permits, I would suggest that you think about what kind of business you are interested in starting. Then we need to do some research on how we get you started in that business. What type of capital would you need to get there and laying the path for the start up, then the details for licenses, etc come after that. Hopefully your career would be your business. You would start with a career track and then a business plan for that goal. If you want a job working for a firm first, while you plan your business goals, then you would need a résumé to list your skills and target the job with the skills you have. More on that later. I will be happy to help you with more details as you get closer to the dates of launching this career. Be safe and good luck as you move on. Feel free to reach out when possible.

Regards,

First of all, thank you for your service to our country.

If you can tell me your MOS, I may be able to offer more help. In general, you should list out civilian careers that leverage your military experience. Those will be the fields where you stand the best chance of obtaining a management position. Otherwise, you will need to consider entry level positions as well. However, entry level is not a bad thing. The leadership skills taught to you in the Corp will help distinguish you from most people. I also live and work in the Raleigh/Durham area. The job market here is pretty good but military related jobs such as defense contractors are somewhat limited. Therefore, your resume should avoid military jargon (some is OK but be sure to explain it) in favor of civilian equivalent language. Depending upon your area of expertise, consider some language on your resume that shows you can manage project oriented tasks and not just day to day duties. Being able to provide that distinction will show that you can attend to details and organize your work into logical sequences.

You mentioned starting a business as well. If this is high on your list of possibilities, I recommend that you check out North Carolina's website for business licenses. It will provide some information on how to structure a business on the right legal foundation and whether you need special permits or licenses to engage in certain types of work.

Good Luck and feel free to contact me if you have additional questions.

What do you have to offer an employer? Get a college degree if you do not have one. Plan to start at the bottom. - get a job in Purchasing/Supply Chain as a Junior Buyer. Work your way up: Senior Buyer; Supervisor; Manager, etc.. The Marines have taught you how to work hard, cooperate with people, and not get discouraged. Use that during an interview. Good luck.
