About Joan
I grew up in a home in which my Dad traveled a lot for business, not just Western Europe but Eastern Europe and Asia, too. With that influence, I studied, lived and worked abroad in Latin America and Spain. From that experience I developed an appreciation for other cultures - and a deep gratitude for all that our country stands for. In terms of education, I focused on Latin American studies, business administration and nonprofit management.
After a 15 year international financial services career, for 10 years I co-led a U.S. based nonprofit focused on helping disadvantaged Latin American communities build self-reliance and alleviate poverty. I later combined my two careers into "impact investing," deploying capital to generate both a financial return and social and/or environmental benefits that are actively measured an reported. My focus has been on Microfinance and Small and Medium Enterprises. We can and should expect that companies will not only deliver good products and services, but will also contribute to improving the communities where they operate.
In my free time I enjoy spending time with family, singing in a choir and being outdoors.
