About John

I'm a journalist based out of Washington, D.C. and an avid rock climber, mountaineer, and cyclist. After I earned my bachelor's in Philosophy from the United States Military Academy in 2013, I spent eight years in the U.S. Army as an artillery officer, frequently working with international partners.

I'm both a passionate journalist and experienced leader with experience leading multicultural and international teams in high pressure environments. I’ve carved out a unique beat for myself. I harnessed my love of sports and the outdoors to produce quality journalism. My previous stories showed how the pandemic is affecting parts of the outdoor industry. I interviewed Mike Wardian, a world record ultra-marathoner, about training during the pandemic. I also produced a video and digital investigative story about the Bureau of Land Management’s oil and gas leasing process and how decisions in Utah support the outdoor recreation economy.

Whether it's a feature covering local trails or hard news explainers on rising avalanche deaths, I’m able of editing and producing independently and on the move. I’m hyper aware of how the visuals of a story can draw in the viewer and high audio quality can keep them there. I’m very experienced shooting, scripting, editing, and voicing my packages completely solo.
